The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District. Senator Akwashiki passed away on Wednesday at a hospital in India.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau paid glowing tribute to the late senator, describing him as a legislator of outstanding quality and dedication.
Senator Akwashiki, who hailed from Angba Iggah in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and returned for a second term in 2023. He died at the age of 52.
Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, noted that throughout his time in the Senate, the late lawmaker demonstrated uncommon patriotism and unwavering commitment to national development through his contributions both within and outside the chamber.
“Senator Akwashiki was a parliamentarian par excellence who worked tirelessly to improve the living standards of the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District and beyond.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family, the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District, and the entire people of Nasarawa State. May Almighty God grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
