The Senate on Tuesday resumed plenary but shortly after adjourned proceedings in honour of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District until his death on December 31, 2025.
Announcing the passing of the lawmaker, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, described Akwashiki as a committed public servant who discharged his legislative responsibilities with diligence, humility and a strong sense of duty.
Akpabio recalled that the late senator served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour in the 9th Senate and later as Chairman of the Committee on Air Force in the 10th Senate.
He informed the chamber that Senator Akwashiki had since been laid to rest.
In his honour, the Senate observed a one-minute silence as a final mark of respect for the departed colleague.
Thereafter, the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), in line with Senate tradition, moved a motion that all items on the Order Paper be stepped down until the next legislative day.
Bamidele also disclosed that a date would be announced later for a special sitting at which members of the late senator’s family would be present to receive tributes from his colleagues.
The motion was seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Oyewunmi Olalere, after which the Senate President adjourned plenary to Wednesday, January 28, at 11:00 a.m.
