Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike has applauded the Court of Appeal for upholding the judgement of the Federal High Court that nullified the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held on 15 and 16 November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
In his reaction, Wike happiness that, as a party that claims to uphold democratic principles, “we must not condone impunity, we must follow due process and allow the rule of law to prevail”.
However, the FCT Minister used the opportunity to call on all leaders of the party to come together, put their differences aside and rebuild the party before the party primary elections scheduled for April and May 2026 in preparation for 2027 general elections.
According to him, before the convention, he had warned that what the party leadership was doing would not help the party because every step taken in violation of the law would eventually be set aside, adding that “you cannot rely on money or power and assume that because you are a governor or a powerful figure you can do anything you like”.
“The nullification of the convention gives us a new opportunity for all the groups within the party to come together and see how we can rebuild the party. That is very important because some people believed that, in pursuit of their personal interests, they could simply go ahead and do whatever they wanted.
On Monday the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja affirmed the judgment of the Federal High Court which nullified the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where Tanimu Turaki emerged as the National Chairman of the party.
Delivering the judgment, a three man panel of the appellate court led by Justice Mohammed Danjuma upheld the decision of the trial court presided over by Justice James Omotosho, which had earlier restrained the conduct of the convention.
According to the Electoral Act 2026, all political parties must hold their primary elections to elect candidates that will fly the tickets of their respective parties in the 2027 general elections scheduled for January and February next year.
