In a landmark step toward sustainable healthcare delivery, the European Union (EU), in collaboration with the Abia State Government, has unveiled a N4.84 billion solar-powered initiative to electrify over 25 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state.
Dubbed the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP), the intervention spans all 17 local government areas and aims to guarantee uninterrupted, 24/7 electricity to frontline health facilities, particularly in underserved and rural communities.
The project was formally launched Tuesday at the Government House, Umuahia, with Governor Alex Otti represented by his deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu. The Deputy Governor described the initiative as a game-changer for healthcare infrastructure and a catalyst for rural economic development.
“This project will not only strengthen our healthcare delivery system but will also breathe life into our communities,” Emetu said. “It holds the promise of revitalizing rural economies and improving the well-being of our people.”
He expressed appreciation to the EU for choosing Abia among the few states selected in the current phase of the project, commending NTU International, the implementing partner, for their professionalism and commitment.
“On behalf of the government and people of Abia State, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to the EU leadership in Brussels. This partnership reinforces our resolve to build resilient and equitable healthcare systems,” he said.
Mr. Tinyan Ogiehor, Senior Stakeholder Engagement Manager for NISHP, underscored the transformative impact of the project, noting that it would significantly improve health outcomes through reliable, renewable energy.
“This project directly addresses the power challenges facing rural PHCs by ensuring constant electricity for vital services—ranging from diagnostics to cold storage for vaccines and life-saving drugs,” Ogiehor stated.
He revealed that Abia State is contributing 30% in counterpart funding, signaling strong local ownership and sustainability.
Beyond health, the solar installations are expected to support more than 50 small businesses operating around the PHCs, thereby spurring grassroots economic activity and job creation.
To ensure effective delivery and oversight, a 10-member Steering Committee chaired by the Abia State Commissioner for Power has been inaugurated to guide implementation.
The NISHP forms part of the EU’s broader agenda to promote renewable energy adoption, strengthen public health systems, and advance inclusive development across Nigeria.
